For years, I believed leadership meant showing up, producing results, and taking care of the team. What I did not realise was that without caring for myself first, I could not sustain the clarity or emotional strength that true leadership demands. More importantly, I was missing a crucial connection: emotional self-awareness is the foundation of every other leadership skill.
Embrace Self-Care as a Leadership Skill
Leadership is not just about guiding others—it starts with leading yourself. This begins with developing what is called “emotional self-regulation”: the ability to recognise your stress patterns, manage your reactions, and make decisions from a created place rather than a reactive one.
I know this is easier said than done. But it can be accomplished—and believing it is possible is the first step.
My Wake-Up Call
I learned this lesson the hard way during my corporate years. I loved both the organisation and my role, having enjoyed a successful career progression up to that point. Then organisational changes hit, bringing new challenges on both personal and professional fronts.
The merger brought uncertainty, competition, and rivalry, along with all the complicated emotions that follow. Around the same time, I became a mother, which brought serious complications to my physical health.
Despite everything, I kept pushing forward, convinced I should—and could—handle it all. I pushed until my mental and physical wellbeing paid the price. I felt defeated and furious, especially with myself for not being stronger.
Looking back, what I lacked was not determination—I had plenty of that. What I was missing was healthy resilience grounded in wisdom rather than sheer stubbornness. If I knew then what I know now, I would have approached everything differently. But sometimes the most valuable lessons come from the hardest experiences.
Building Sustainable Leadership Capacity
True resilience requires more than good intentions and sheer willpower. It needs steady, intentional habits: sleep that nourishes, boundaries that protect, reflection that centres, and space for self-renewal.
When you create a structure that supports your emotional wellbeing, you are not just coping—you are preparing. You are building the capacity to lead with authenticity, grace, and grounded confidence.
Your Next Step
Block out time each day this week for one self-care habit that specifically supports your level of resilience. It might be 10 minutes of movement, silence, creativity, or rest. Before making any significant decision, check in with yourself: “Am I responding from clarity or reactivity?”
Reflection question: What is one daily habit that helps you lead from a place of emotional strength?
I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments, or tag someone who models this kind of self-aware leadership.
